Since 2003, I have acted on the Board of an effective, education-based non-profit, Children of the City. Their community outreach has preceded my own involvement, as they’ve served the community since 1981. Their mission is to alleviate the hardship of underprivileged children in the region of Southwest Brooklyn.
While the organization began as a children’s prevention outreach, it has evolved according to the needs of the community and now includes trauma intervention, counseling, an after-school and summer program, courtroom and legal advocacy, social work, guardianship, financial counseling, youth mentoring, and other like services. In supporting children, Children of the City establishes positive relationships with their families in order to effect more substantial change. By approaching their community outreach intergenerationally, Children of the City helps community youth thrive in their education and social relationships, ensures home and financial stability by working directly with the heads of households and offers parents the support and guidance.
The dedicated team which supports Children of the City and their noble efforts includes approximately fifty professionals, like me. Children of the City is fortunate to employ the efforts of fifty trained and committed volunteers who visit close to one-thousand children each month. The organization maintains current information on over 500 families in the community, representing 2,000 children; this database serves as an accurate channel to provide resources, affirmation and encouragement.
